What it measures

The Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale–Revised looks at four areas: social relatedness, circumscribed (focused) interests, language, and sensory-motor experience. Asking about childhood as well as now reflects that autism is lifelong.

Who it is for

Adults who want a detailed look at autistic traits across their life, often after a short screener or while preparing for an assessment. It was developed for adults of average or above-average intelligence.

How long it takes

About 20 minutes for 80 questions. You can stop and come back: your answers so far are saved in this browser.

How it is scored

Each statement has four answers: true now and when I was young, true only now, true only when I was younger than 16, and never true.

Most statements score 3, 2, 1 or 0 in that order. Seventeen statements describe typical experiences and score in reverse.

Totals run from 0 to 240, with a score for each of the four areas. In the original validation study, 65 was the threshold at which every autistic participant scored.

What it cannot tell you

  • Despite its name, it is not a diagnosis. The authors designed it to assist a clinician’s assessment, not replace one.
  • The original study was run in clinics. In community and online samples, many people without autism also score above 65.
  • Anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD and other conditions share many of the experiences it asks about.
  • Recalling childhood accurately is hard; your answers about "when I was young" are your best estimate.

Screening, not diagnosis. Your result describes your answers. Only a qualified professional can diagnose autism, ADHD or a mental health condition.
